What mending does is every time when you get experience it repairs the tool with mending, for example you get a mending sword, and you kill a spider or a zombie or anything and you gain experience, that experience that you gained will repair your sword.

Let's say, 30 days to get ready, then at day 30 You have to build small but building with no doors, nether portal and water source and farm if you need it, then you have to go to Nether and survive there 100 days. You may leave only to get water and/or food.
