The Day the Dinosaurs Died - Minute by Minute

66 million years ago, maybe on a Tuesday afternoon, life was the same as it had been the day before or a thousand years before or pretty much a million years before. Things were good for our feathered dinosaur buddies. Until a tiny, tiny detail in the sky changed.

The Indian Deccan Traps "theory", the idea proposed by Gerta Keller, is thoroughly disproved. Mainly because it goes against all evidence for ANY asteroid impact whatsoever. (The theory says that the dinosaurs died out due to volcanic activity in India. No mention of asteroids, never mind the giant crater in the Gulf of Mexico.) I can't believed you reconciled the two! It's like saying the Earth is round but also some people believe it's flat, therefore it's a dodecahedron. Ridiculous! You're doing a bad job again, Kurzgesagt! Some things just don't have a middle ground, no matter how balanced you try to be. Vaccines don't cause autism, and the Earth is spherical!... Takes me back to the Addiction video you guys did.

  • OHM-968692

@yigithan.kilinc The point was that on some topics the science is pretty clear, even if you don't understand it (like in this case). Meaning there's no middle ground, no compromise between two extremes. The flat & spherical earth was just an example. Same with climate change. There's no need to host "alternative" "theories" that "aren't widely accepted".

  • yigithan.kilinc

    yigithan.kilinc

You can't compare people who think the Earth is flat and people who think dinosaurs died cuz of volcanoes instead of a meteor. We can observe Earth's spherical shape but we can't be certain how exactly dinosaurs died out. So, they included it as a theory, even though it's not widely accepted.

Wasn't the globe already a bit dire, prior to the asteroid hitting? Like during the Triassic and Jurassic mass extinction. Maybe it was because the meteor wasn't discovered until 1980, so we just focused on the surrounding environment, plants and animals of the time. Not knowing the cause of the volcanic activity until 140 years after they got their name.

The thermal radiation from the explosion travels at the speed of light and immediately burns everything within a radius of about 1500 kilometers. While energy from the impact so hard against the Earth's crust that it looses all strength and flows away like a liquid, creating a hole 25 kilometers deep and 100 kilometers wide. The ocean is pushed back of hundreds of kilometers, like a kid jumps into a puddle. As the crust bounces back, melted and flowing crust forms a temporary mountain stretching 10 kilometers into the sky.. An incredible amount of material is blasted into the higher atmosphere or even out into space, as much as 60 times the original mass of the asteroid.

@Pyrros Dimas The crater was found in the 1980s by an oil company looking for oil and gas, physics calculations on computers can work out the rest from that. There is a layer of soil at at a certain depth that dates to the crater it is found all over the world, there is lot of dead creatures and plants in that layer compared to the layers above and below, not many large dinosaurs are found above that layer.

2:02 There is also the Multiple Impact Hypothesis which indicates that while the asteroid headed towards Earth, it was fragmented and struck on different parts of the planet. There are the Chixculub crater (the one in the Yucatan Penninsula, mentioned in the video) Shiva crater (Arabian sea), Silverpit crater (North Sea) and Bovtyshka crater (today's Ukraine). However, it is disputed if Shiva and Silverpit are indeed impact craters or not and there are uncertainities with the age of Bovtyshka. Great video as always!

It would give the wrong impression. 75% of all life went extinct, which included at least 80% of animal life, and over 90% of marine life in general. Not to mention dinosaurs ultimately survived in the form of birds. Whereas pterosaurs and marine reptiles, for example, went completely extinct.
