The W124 Mercedes 500E was the world's most perfect sedan | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 05

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Porsche-built W124 Mercedes 500E, and Jason explains why the 500E and E500 was NOT a Porsche sports sedan with a Mercedes badge. First off, there's not a single Porsche part on the car.

Porsche Engineering Services helped with reengineering the W124's engine compartment to fit in the 32-valve, 4-cam M119 V-8 - for both the 400E and the 500E.

But the 500E doesn't use the same V-8 as the 500SL. It needed shorter connecting rods so that it fit in the same physical space as the 4.2-liter 400E - this way only one structural variant needed to be produced.

The 400E was a response to the Lexus LS400. Why do you think it wasn't called a 420E?

Porsche also did the engineering to bolt up wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension components from the wider and heavier R129 500SL and W124 500SEL. That necessitated fender flares so wide that the 500E didn't fit down the regular W124 production line in Sindelfingen.

For both models, Porsche performed the physical modifications to Mercedes-built W124 chassis, and sent them back to Sindelfingen for paint. The 400E remained there, but because of its width, the 500E was sent back to Porsche, which assembled the 500E at a second Zuffenhausen factory.

With Bruno Sacco's revolutionary looks, aerodynamics, obsession with safety, and Mercedes build quality and engineering might, the W124 was certainly among the best (and most expensive) sedans in the world.

Still is. It's close to perfect. But it's not a Porsche Sports Sedan.

I remember having the opportunity to buy one of these in 2002 for $6,000 or around there. I didn't do it because I was concerned with Mercedes Benz reliability. Then a few years later I bought a W124 with an inline 6 and never had one issue with the car. That was when I realized the mistake I had made. That 500e would have been a way better car to own. Lessons we learn in life.

I would race it against my 2017 Chevrolet SS Sedan (built 2013-17 ONLY) and would handily beat the Mercedes in ALL categories. However, for the few years that the E500/500E was built, it was an AMAZING performance sedan. Great videography by Jason, as usual!

When the Automotive Editor of the Arizona Republic was done with his early evaluations of the 500E, he returned it to a representative appointed by Mercedes-Benz LA region in Phoenix to be held for its next press professional to play with. On a particular Friday afternoon, that was ME! As the Parts & Service Manager for Phoenix Motor company I was a "logical choice." Besides, I lived three blocks from said AR editor and could walk over and pick it up. With a weekend ahead and no one expecting its return until Monday morning, my imagination went into overdrive! With wife not yet appreciating what she was riding in, I headed for the Vulture Mine Road northwest of town. Twisting and turning through the scrub desert with no cliffs, no guard rails, no radar, and NO TRAFFIC, I proceeded to use it like it was meant to be used. Thrill of a lifetime. The end of this clip brought back those fabulous memories. Thanks to all who put this together, because--quite incredibly--they got the whole thing exactly right.

My first W124 was a 1987 taxi 200D. I got it when it had 700,000 km in the meter. It no longer passed exhaust testing at 1,100,000 km so I had to let it go. Tried something else, got diasppointed, and went back for nostalgia. My second W124 was a 1991 230 CE. So much fun but not the most convenient car in the Subarctic winter. It failed me last winter, at thirty years of age. It didn't need to wait for repair for long. I got an offer for it at the parking lot. It's still going. The new owner sends me pictures! I think I'm done now. It's time. If someone calls it the world's most perfect car, though, I've got no qualms with that :>

The W124 was the last of the bullet proof Mercs, no Mercedes has been built to last like these were since. My dad was best friends with the managing director of Spar Trucks which was a Mercedes dealership back in the day and he got my dad the first 300D on the road in Britain, every now and then it was used for road tests for interested buyers as it was fully loaded and in Ice Diamond Blue which was a popular colour then. 👌👌👌

Happened with every popular sports car , just go to USplan and you and others will start a propaganda campaign to get the market up where you want it and then release your supply , they have been doing this for years now ! Smarten up ! PS Its the comments section that does the real sales work, there are always owners of these cars who will to click on a video of the car they own and tell you how smart they were to buy it and you are a fool if you don't buy one too !
